Finding the right doctor for a health issue is a pain anywhere in the world. People either rely on word of mouth or take a leap of faith while choosing a doctor. We are launching DocHood.com today to solve this problem. This easy to use portal aims to be the World’s largest directory of doctors and hospitals. Not only does it help patients discover the right doctors and hospitals nearby, it also allows them to look at the experiences shared by other patients.
Medical tourism in 2015 is a $130 billion industry worldwide. India is a leading destination for people looking for super specialized care at affordable prices. It is estimated that about 3.2 million patients will visit India in 2015. “DocHood.com aims to accelerate the growth of medical tourism ten folds in next five years. Remote patients can research about doctors and hospitals on DocHood.com before taking an expensive trip to India” says Mohammed Abubakr, the Founder and CEO of DocHood.com. Abubakr is passionate about healthcare in India and is using his seven years of experience at Microsoft building world class software to improve healthcare. “We are living in a world where we use the most optimized way to order food or book a cab on our mobile phones, but when it comes to our health, we rely on luck”. DocHood.com promises to change all that. It has been in pilot for 6 months and already has over 10,000 doctors and hospitals listed across 5 cities including Singapore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. By mid of 2016, we plan to have over one lakh hospitals & doctors from 25 cities across the world listed.
“Now-a-days, people don’t even visit a restaurant without reading the review, how can you expect patients to risk their lives visiting a hospital without knowing details about the facilities available at the hospital?”, questions Subathra Santanam, co-founder of Dochood.com. An alumni of BITS Pilani, with a work experience of 12 years as Solution Architect in US, Subathra returned India back in 2014 and heads the engineering team of DocHood.com.
DocHood.com’s business model is not built around appointment booking of doctor’s for fever and cold. A typical doctor in India makes about 100 Rupees ($2 USD) to see a patient. “These appointment booking companies are trying to snatch away 10-15% of that consultation fees by offering technology. That’s not creating any additional market value” says Abubakr. The value is created when technology companies grow the market size. Imagine a patient somewhere in Tunisia, makes a decision to travel to Hospital in Bhopal (India) for undergoing a heart surgery and in the process spends about $10,000. Imagine a technology company enabling 10 million such patients make decision to come to India and getting the treatment done. “We want to be that technology company”, says Abubakr.
In June’2014, DocHood.com received an angel investment from Fabella Singapore Pvt Ltd, a Singapore based venture firm headed by Krish Datta, former President of SAP Southeast Asia and Emerging markets.
“Dochood.com will do to healthcare industry what Zomato did to restaurant industry. In next 3 years, it will help millions of patients not only discover the best doctors and hospitals but also get their treatment done at the most optimized price” says Krish Datta.
